It’s time to come clean. I think you are all owed an honest confession. I don’t actually have a daughter. Just kidding. But it would have been funny. No, No!! You’ve seen pictures of her little hands and feet. And back of her head!
No, the confession is….
O sleeps in our bed. Yes. She is 3-1/2 and she is still sleeping in our bed. Not because we are a co-sleeping family. It’s because she weaseled her way into our bed. It started off with sleeping on a cot next to the bed. Then one day she started sleeping in the bed, and DH started sleeping on the couch. It’s been going on for… I don’t know at least a year now. I know, I KNOW!! We let it get out of control. But now it’s time. It’s time to push her out. DH sleeps on the couch, and I think he misses the bed. And to be perfectly honest the couch cushions have seen better days.
Last night we finally tried it. We are both on board. First we had a conversation. Daddy explained to her how it’s Mommy and Daddy’s room. And O has her room. And Daddy needs her help, to be a big girl and stay in her room all night. Daddy needs to work on Saturday, and he needs to sleep in his bed. Then I go and explain how she is really lucky to have her own room. Did she remember the sad kids on TV? They don’t have their own room. And when she gets older she can invite her friends for a sleep over? Who does she want to have come over? Rose and Lana. And if she stays in her room the whole night for 7 days straight, Daddy will take her to Toys R Us and she can pick a Barbie. But she needs to stay in bed for 7 days straight.
DH comes in the bedroom, which let me tell you he is pretty annoying. With his breathing. And falling asleep before me. And breathing. So annoying. I am of course fully awake for a good two hours later when O comes in the bed. For some reason DH and I never talked about what to do if she comes in the bed. We were so confident that she stay in her bed that we didn’t have a plan if she didn’t. So she stayed in our bed. DH really did have to work today, so he needed his sleep. Needless to say, she tossed and turned so much that DH left for his bed…the couch. O slept and I slept.
In the morning we talked about why she came in the room. She said the Baba Yaga (a Polish witch) was in her room last night. I don’t know if she actually believes that or if she is using it as an excuse. We talked more about big girls sleeping in their own room. And we have the snausage coming to stay with us for two weeks, and he will want to sleep in her room with her. And if she leaves, he will get lonely. So she has to stay in her room.
Tonight is take two. But if she gets up in the middle of the night. We take her back to her room (we have already discussed this). Let’s hope it won’t come to that. It’s so hard getting up in the middle of the night!
